The Gorilla Extension

On your last day of your riding safari, bid farewell to the camp crew and ride to the airstrip, where a chartered plane is waiting to fly you to new adventures. You will be met upon arrival at Kigali (Kanobe airport) and drive to Musanze province, arriving at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge, seeing points of interest along the way. Relax at leisure in preparation for tomorrow’s trek. The lodge has lovely gardens and a great view of the three volcanoes of the Ruwenzori Mountain Range.

Begin the day with breakfast at 5:45am and get ready for trekking, which begins at 8:00am with a briefing from the park staff. Ensure to carry along with you rain jacket, drinking water, snacks, jungle boots etc. The guides will lead you inside the jungle to see the shy primates of the group you have been booked for. Do not forget to take your lunch boxes and all the necessary gear to track the rare Mountain Gorilla, perhaps one of the most exciting wildlife experiences on earth. The hiking period depends on where the apes might have spent the night and how far they may have moved that morning. Their movements are governed by availability of food and other hardships of the wild.

Drive to the office for registration with your lunch boxes and drinking water. Allocation of Gorilla groups will depend upon your energy. With your guide depart for the jungle and yet another unique expedition. Gorilla trekking is a “full body” experience as you follow the gorillas and there are no paths or trails! Gorilla habitat is comprised of stinging nettles and you will need to wear clothing that covers your arms and legs for protection. In addition, gloves are important as you will need to use your hands to help clear your own path. The volcano range is also a rain forest and gentle rainfall can be expected, so a light raincoat is recommended.

The day starts with a hearty breakfast before driving back to the airport for your departing flight.
